Opening Plenary: Resetting our Path Forward

Since mid-March when the full brunt of the coronavirus pandemic hit, HPN has held more than 40 virtual meetings with members on a variety of topics, all focused on responding to the crisis. At this opening plenary we will start pivoting to a greater focus on recovery and change – resetting our path forward by applying what we are learning from this crisis to create a more resilient, more equitable, stronger affordable housing industry.

We will hear insights from leaders of HPN members on forward-looking ideas that have emerged or been crystallized by the pandemic. In the coming months, we will continue to bring together our network to share ideas around responding and adapting to the crisis, but during this plenary let’s reflect on how to seize this key moment in time to work for systemic change.

People: New Approaches to Residents and Staff

How will we use what we’ve learned over the past three months to find new and better ways to work with residents and staff at the property, organizational, and portfolio levels? We’ll share some broad learnings and insights as we move our operations forward – understanding that there will be constraints and hurdles to overcome through the foreseeable future. But do our experiences point to a revamped way of thinking about our work as we move to recovery and, in many ways, to rebuild our industry? There will be three breakouts on specific areas where we will delve deeper into the discussion.

Housing and Community Development: Adapting and Changing the Framework

How do we change and strengthen our approach to creating more rental housing, more homeownership opportunities, and stronger more cohesive and equitable communities in the wake of the pandemic? What type of capital – and resources from government and the private sector - will we need, and how can we work together to get them? How do we position our organizations as leaders in the new, post-pandemic recovery? What does the disproportionate incidence of COVID-19 in communities of color tell us about critical and urgent change that is needed, and how do we respond? After an initial industry-wide framing, there will be three breakouts where we will delve deeper into the discussion.
