About Self-Help Enterprises

Incorporated in 1965, Self-Help Enterprises (SHE) is as an outgrowth of a successful project of the American Friends Service Committee, the Quaker service organization. SHE was established as the first – and ultimately most prolific – mutual self-help housing organization in the country, a position it has maintained consistently since inception. We pursue our mission by working with – rather than for – the people we serve. Today, while the organization has dramatically expanded its scope, mutual self-help housing remains emblematic of the organization’s work, with core values that infuse a diverse range of programs and services.

SHE's mission is to work together with low income families to build and sustain healthy homes and communities in the San Joaquin Valley of California. We seek to improve living conditions through core activities including single family homeownership development, multifamily affordable rental housing acquisition and development, infrastructure improvements for clean water and sanitary sewer, and a variety of related programs to provide opportunity and services to disadvantaged individuals and communities. SHE has extensive experience working with farmworker populations, low income families, community leadership, seniors, and people of color. SHE plays a prominent role in addressing and advocating for the needs of disadvantaged communities and the people who reside in them.
