About Neighborhood Housing Services of New York City

Neighborhood Housing Services of New York City (NHSNYC), through financial empowerment and affordable lending, enables individuals and families to invest in, preserve and improve their neighborhoods, their homes and their future. Working in partnership with the private sector, government agencies and local residents and businesses, we offer a wide range of services based on the needs of each individual community we serve, including financial and homeownership education, loan origination and mortgage facilitation to support the attainment and sustainability of homeownership for underserved New Yorkers. Our ultimate goal is to support the realization of the best quality of life possible for each New Yorker, starting with a stable home.

NHSNYC was incorporated in 1982 to provide educational and financial support for the promotion and preservation of homeownership in NYC. Our first program offered low-interest loans to homeowners in underserved low- and moderate-income communities which helped address widespread redlining at the time. To-date we have provided more than 180,000 clients with homeownership education, facilitated $1.65 billion in affordable mortgage financing to help 7,400 clients become first-time homeowners and originated 4,965 rehab and 1,129 emergency loans to help thousands of clients maintain homeownership. We are a federally certified Community Development Financial Institution, a housing counseling agency certified by the U.S. Dept. of Housing & Urban Development and a chartered member of NeighborWorks America. Today with a citywide network of partners, we continue to assist low- and moderate-income New Yorkers achieve their goals of affordable and sustainable homeownership.
