Avesta Housing is a Portland-based nonprofit organization with a mission to improve lives and strengthen communities by promoting and providing affordable quality homes for people in need.

Founded in 1972 with a shoestring budget and a staff of three, Avesta has grown to become one of the country’s most innovative and respected leaders in affordable housing and is the largest nonprofit affordable housing provider in Northern New England with more than 300 employees and an annual budget of nearly $60 million.

Avesta owns and manages more than 100 properties, more than 3,100 apartments, and two assisted living facilities, providing safe, quality, affordable homes for 4,700 residents in Maine and New Hampshire. An additional 800 homes are in the development pipeline. Avesta households include working adults, families, older adults, formerly chronically homeless individuals, veterans, people with disabilities, and more, representing an incredibly diverse population. Its Board of Directors is drawn from the financial, business, public-sector, community, social service, and housing spheres.

Avesta Housing has continued its trend of substantial growth by opening 8 properties of new construction with a collective total of more than 400 affordable homes over the past four years. We consistently receive high marks from our state, federal, and private-sector partners, and we are recognized nationally for groundbreaking work in bringing together nonprofit, for-profit, private, and public sector organizations for the benefit of our communities. Avesta was named a Best Place to Work in Maine in 2024, Best Senior Living in the Portland Radio Group’s 2024 Best of the 207 Awards, and Best Property Management Company in the Portland, Maine Best of 2023 Awards.
